WP1. DETERMINING VOCAL CORRELATES OF EMOTIONS

WP1. DETERMINING VOCAL CORRELATES OF EMOTIONS

In order to develop a good diagnostic tool, it is first necessary to have a comprehensive dataset of vocalisations from different biologically relevant situations (Task 1.1) that can be used for validating acoustic parameters as welfare indicators (Task 1.3). PostDoc 1 (P5) will therefore use data supplied by all project partners to identify situations that are missing. She/he will collaborate with other partners (P1, P4) to experimentally produce data for vocalisations in situations that are missing (Task 1.2). Situations that are currently lacking mostly include positive conditions necessary to quantify discriminant validity. Specific examples of situations that should therefore be included are anticipation of a signaled reward, handling by familiar humans, which is experienced as positive by pigs, and play behaviour. This will be supplemented by additional situations identified after consolidation of the comprehensive dataset (Task 1.1). This will necessarily be followed by meta-analysis (in collaboration with P6) to validate acoustic correlates that allow differentiation of emotionally loaded situations to which pigs are normally exposed under practical condition. This data and validation of acoustic correlates is an essential basis for later development of the recognition tool in WP 2.
